Participants will learn How to Whisper and BE HEARD as you play the part of the “horse” or the “trainer” in these fun and educational activities. Auditors welcome. Series produced by Southern Illinois University Equine Science Program.
All activities held at the Walk in Your Horse’s Shoes “Arena” located on the north wall of the Expo Center (just west of the food concession).
Part 1 – The Horse’s Perspective on Life (Saturday 11:30 a.m.; Sunday 11:30 a.m.)
- Why Horses gather in herds: How to use this need to create a horse-human partnership
- See through your horse’s eyes: It will open a whole new way of understanding your horse.
- The power of touch: experience a horse’s sensitivity. Learn how to use it for exquisite communication.
Part 2 – Whispering Without Speaking (Saturday 3:30 p.m.; Sunday 1:30 p.m.)
- Pats or punches: What motivates your horse? Test different training methods on yourself to see which works best and fastest.
- Refine the Reward: Practice “talking” to your horse with your physical “voice” and learn how much you can accomplish with the lightest touch.
- Bracing for Survival: Experience how a horse reacts to a threat and learn simple – and delicious – ways to overcome it.
Part 3 – It’s All About Space (Saturday 5:30 p.m.; Sunday 3:30 p.m.)
- Bursting the Bubble: Learn how to discover your horse’s personal space, how to respect and utilize it
- The “Remote Control” Horse: Use what you have learned to control your horse from a distance
